An interview with Michael Swan

Hello everyone,

Michael Swan is a renowned author whose books 'Practical English Usage' (OUP), 'How English Works' (OUP, M.Swan & Catherine Walter) and 'Learner English' (CUP M.Swan & B. Smith) probably form part of many language centre's resources. In an interview after his workshop in an International Language Conference in JALT, Japan, he was asked to give his thoughts on four questions:

  1. What is grammar and why do languages need grammar?
  2. Why did you edit a book called 'Learner English - a Teacher's guide to interference and other problems'?
  3. What are your thoughts on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF)?
  4. What are the major changes you have seen in your profession?
